For centuries leather has been the material of choice and used to provide the best protection against the elements. These bush hats are each individually hand crafted by Cruga Leather Gear, the Selke family, who live in an African village and pride themselves in quality hand made items. They have been in business and have been manufacturing outdoor leather gear of exceptional quality for over 24 years.

Pith Helmets Our Pith Helmets are handmade in Zimbabwe. Made from cork, 100% cotton Twill and complete with pugaree, chinstrap and inner lining - adjustable headband.
The pith helmet served traditionally and mainly the military colonial forces of Europe and the United States. It received widespread recognition as the head-dress for natable missionaries such as Stanley and Livingston, and became the standard head-wear for anyone traveling to the tropics from the 1840's to the turn of the century. The range of hats had expanded significantly over the years and has been used by the Victorian Calvary in the Boer and Punjabi Wars, the Italian Abyssinian War, the Foreign Legion in North Africa and the US Marine 1880. The hat was originally made using cotton twill fabric and pith bark from certain indigenous trees (paper bark trees). When soldiers returned to England from duty in Africa or India, the cold and wet climatic conditions caused these hats to shrink and collapse, so cork was used in making the hat instead of pith bark. Todays pith helmets are individually hand crafted using cotton twill covers, low density cork and an adjustable sweatband and chin strap. The pungaree (bandana) is traditionally hand layered in a light Indian cotton.
