OAK WINE BARRELS |
Tips & Techniques |
| Sealing a new or dry barrel
The staves in older used, dry, or new wine barrels will shrink as they dry. This is normal and treatment will fix it right up. To stop the leakes in an old or new barrel just fill it with cold water and let it set, usually just a few hours but in some cases overnight. Refill with cold water, turn upside down, and let it set again. Please remember to close the spigot and seal the bung hole. Usually this is enough but in some cases you may have to do the process again. Check well for leaks. | Cleaning the wine barrel After rinsing or sealing a barrel, drain the barrel completely. In a seperate container mix, stirring until disolved, one pound of Barolkleen to every five gallons of water as required to fill the barrel. Fill the barrel to the top, seal the bung and let sit for three days turning the barrel 1/2 turn every twelve hours. Drain the barrel and rinse it out three times minimum with cold water. Repeat this operation at least one more time then add at least one more final rinse with cold water. Fill with water until ready to fill with wine. Mix up a solution of 1 ox citric acid, 2 oz of sulphite crystals to 2 gallons of water. Fill barrel about halfway, close bung and roll the barrel around to rinse the barrel completely. Drain and flush out the barrel with water. This should be done shortly before filling with wine. Fill with wine. |
